The festivities took place November 9, 2002, with proceeds benefiting CrimeWatch. Kathy Luedke did an incredible job organizing this very successful event. Two hundred and forty runners from all over Dallas and as far away as Canada and North Carolina participated in the first run. The winner, Juan Rodriguez of Dallas, had a smoking time of 15 minutes 32 seconds. The Party in the Park attracted over 200 residents. Children enjoyed a fun run (with Officer Joe leading the way—barely!), a bouncing castle, and a tug-o-war. While the kids were playing, the adults were salivating over the wonderful chili cooked up by competitors in the Chili Cook-Off. With six participants and three very chili-savvy judges, the competition was fierce. The Chili Cook-Off judges knew their chili. Fire Chief Steve Abraira, Olivia Henderson, Principal at Stonewall Jackson Elementary, and Officer Joe Chatham all readily agreed to participate in this year’s event. For their endeavor they each received an apron with the official M-Street 5k Run and Party in the Park logo. Angelika Theatre also generously donated theatre tickets, so that each of our judges and a guest could enjoy a movie at one of the best theatres in town! All competitors also received an M-Street 5K Run and Party in the Park apron and Dodie’s New Orleans Seafood Cafe provided the Best Overall winner with “Dinner for Two.” Greenland Hills resident John Buell of Buell Design graciously donated his time to create the awesome logo for the event’s T-shirts and aprons. The 5k and Party in the Park attracted wonderful sponsors: Belmont Custom Homes, Virginia Cook Realtors, AmericanHomeKey Real Estate, Lone Star Bank, Jade Painting, Snuffers and David Griffin Realtors. The sponsor donations, race registration fees, T-shirt sales and raffle sales netted Crime Watch over $5,000! This will allow Crime Watch to increase coverage hours. The Greenland Hills CrimeWatch says “thank you” to all those that participated, all those that helped, and all those that came out to EAT chili!
