In November 2002, the GHNA reorganized parkway tree plantings. Thanks to the hard work of long-time GHNA resident Francis Dezzany, and others since then, we now have many more parkway trees to grace our streets and shade our sidewalks. The additional trees not only beautify our neighborhood, but also clean the air, make our streets and sidewalks cooler for taking walks, and reduce our electric bills by providing much-needed shade during those hot summer months.
This annual activity is part of the Dallas Reforestation program, which provides trees to non-profit groups for planting in parkways and other public spaces (not for personal use, such as in the front lawn). All trees requested through this program must be planted on public property. In our case, this refers to our parkways -- that area between sidewalk and curb -- and there is a maximum of two trees per lot. If you already have one tree in your parkway you would be eligible for one through this program. If you have no trees, you would be eligible for two trees. If you already have two parkway trees on your lot...congratulations!
Trees are normally scheduled for delivery and planting in October. Residents are responsible for planting the trees but GHNA can arrange for a landscaper to plant them for residents at $50 per tree - a bargain!
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Planting the trees
• Keeping them watered for 2 years
• Replacing any trees that die
For 2011, and going forward, the beautification committee will survey the GHNA neighborhood and find homes that have space for trees to be planted. Those homes identified will be contacted to see if they would like to participate in the parkway trees program. Or, if you think that your home is eligible and you would like to participate you may submit a request. According to Dallas Reforestation guidelines, we can request a maximum of 50 trees per year.
If you have elderly/disabled neighbors who would like to have a tree or two and you'll volunteer to help them with the planting and watering, please submit a request for their trees along with yours. Be sure to list name, address, phone number.
