You can always call 9-1-1 for suspicious activity in progress. NOW, Greenland Hills Neighbors can report the suspicious activity discovered after the fact, or concerning activity seen routinely occurring, with the GH Extended Neighborhood Patrol.

By reporting what you’ve seen or discovered, you are not only aiding the police, but you are also making your neighborhood a safer place.

See examples of activity below:
- A stranger loitering in your neighborhood or a vehicle cruising the streets repeatedly.
- Someone peering into cars or windows.
- A high volume of traffic going to and coming from a home on a daily basis.
- Open or broken doors and windows at an unoccupied residence.
- Tampered/tampering of electrical, gas, or sewer systems without an identifiable company vehicle or uniform.
- Multiple persons who appear to be working in unison and exhibiting suspicious behaviors.
- Signs of forced entry or tampering with gates, security or safety systems.
- If you witness behavior that concerns you, trust your instincts and call 9-1-1.
Neighbors, in the case where a video recording of the suspicious activity reported is needed for an investigation, the Greenland Hills ENP Liaison Officer will contact you directly to provide a link to upload the recording or video of the event.

WHEN TO DIAL 9-1-1
Neighbors, 9-1-1 is for more than just emergencies. If you are witness to a suspicious activity in progress, dial 9-1-1.
When reporting this information, specific details are needed for the information to be valid and useful. It is helpful if you provide your name, address, and phone number in case some information needs clarification. However, this is not required. (You can remain anonymous, but be advised this will limit the actions an officer can take.)
The important factor is to call anytime, day or night. You may be preventing a crime in progress or helping in the apprehension of a criminal.
Examples of such activities to report using 9-1-1:
- Noticing an individual having a coat on when the temperature is extremely warm, and the coat appears to be concealing a large or medium sized item/object.
- An individual leaving packages, bags or other items behind or unattended
- Exhibiting unusual mental or physical symptoms; talking to themselves, running around the neighborhood unclothed
- Unusual noises like screaming, yelling, gunshots or glass breaking.
- Carrying something (item or object) at an unusual hour or at a location that doesn’t fit what they have
- A person ringing your doorbell at an unusual hour (example 2am etc.)
- Someone going door-to-door with no apparent reason
- Suspicious behaviors, such as people lingering in one place for a long time or asking questions about security measures in the area
- Someone walking down the street trying car door handles or looking into windows
- Individuals who linger near entrances and exits or attempt to enter the location repeatedly
- Seeming nervous and looking over their shoulders
- Claiming to represent a utility company, but not wearing a uniform, does not produce identification upon request or does not have a company logo vehicle
- Carrying property at an unusual hour or location, especially if they are attempting to hide the item
- Using binoculars or other devices to peer into apartment and home windows
- Sitting in a vehicle for extended periods of time or conducting transactions from a vehicle
- Abruptly changing behavior when seen
- Individuals in a heated argument, yelling or cursing at each other
Community members only serve as the extra “eyes and ears” of law enforcement. Citizens should never try to take action on observations. Trained law enforcement should be the only ones ever to take action based on observations of suspicious activities.
